One Step Forward, Two Steps Back (Framing Pics)

Whoops, we found a whole album of pictures from mid-September to mid-October that never got posted! So much for blogging the backlog of pictures chronologically. We'll try to keep the "Pictures" page of the blog in reasonable chronological order though, so do check that out!

So, to recap: After we gutted the house, we had do structural work, we developed new floor plans, and we framed the walls. The results are shown here.

The location of the new staircase was a major decision:

Living room, new staircase,
and new front bedroom wall framing

To put the new staircase location in context, take a look at the Before and Afters Compared blog as well as the Before and After Floor Plans blog.

Here is a better look at the new wall framing for the front bedroom. We made the front bedroom a touch wider, and we built a front closet next to the front door:

We made the new staircase to the master bedroom relatively wide (4 feet), which came out nicely. At the top of the staircase in this picture, you can see the old clawfoot tub that we salvaged from the original bathroom downstairs for reuse in the master bathroom upstairs:

room structural work and new subfloor

This is where the original pantry and
bathroom were. The area will now be
part of the open kitchen/dining room.
We removed the pantry and bathroom
walls, replaced the subfloor (shown
here), and added a new beam to
shore up the structural framing above.

This is the framing for the new double
wide sliding back door we added to the
home. The new door is located at the
back of the family room. To the left
of the door, you can see the old
window that we removed.

We shifted the front door slightly to the
left (as viewed from the outside of
the home) in order to be able to widen
the front bedroom. For a while, we had
this temporary door over the new
front door framing.
